The Mayans did a lot of human sacrificing. Life was not not looked at the same way as we look at it. They did not look at borders and nationalism the same way the Europeans did. The Chichen Itza was their claim to fame. Human life was cheap and expendable, different time, different culture.

They were a very bloody group of people. Human sacrafices were done from the Mayan temples all the time. I haven't seen the movie, but I think reality might of been about the same, having seen a lot of the research on the Mayan culture.

Movies tend to exagerate whatever it portrays. I don't think it was Gibson trying to misrepresent.
