This is a tough one, you have the Vikings and their Purple People Eaters, but I don't know much about them other than their nickname, so I can't really consider them (I do know they are not the best ever).
Then you have Ditka's Monsters of the Midway, the 1985 Bears defense, a dominating D that punished opposing players, but I think they are second to the Steel Curtain.
The Steel Curtain was a name given to the Steelers D in the 70's, when they were a dynasty. Led by their coach Chuck Noll, the Steel Curtain had defensive superstars "Mean" Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, Jack Ham, Mel Blount, L.C. Greenwood, Dwight White, and Ernie Holmes. I'm am confident picking the Steel Curtain.

The 2002 bucs had the best pass defense ever and the 2000 ravens had the best run defense ever. Overall, I'd give a slight edge to the 2000 ravens, because they killed everyone in the playoffs.

The Packers had some nasty D's in the 50's and 60's. So did the Bears, Rams and Giants. I would say for my money the Packers were the best but the Rams fearsome foursome was by far the meanest.

i would pick the ravens of 03 over the 85 bears based on that the bears did have a decent offense and won the super bowl. the ravens had none and also won the super bowl. some other great ones where the purple people eaters, steel curtain, orange crush

Toss up - '85 Bears held opps to only 11pts a game and the 2000 Raven allowed only 165pts the whole season.

i would love to say the rams but............ the chargers got the best D why i say that is because they only lost 2 games and defense keep points off the board. U SAID EVER THE DOLPHINS THAT WENT 17-0 to not loose a game in a season yo D gotta be great
