What is a decent weekly allowance for a teenager?

I never recieved an allowance and I thank God that my parrents did not spoil me. I had chores and responsibilities like everyone else I knew but recieved no compensation. I was allowed to get a part time job at 14 yrs old. I mowed lawns prior to my first job. I learned how to work for other people and how to handle the demands of a boss whom is not related. I also learned to help my parrents soley based on the notion that a tight family unit will help one another. What really does a teen need cash for? You already provide clothes, shelter, food and hopefully love and a moral education. My parrents did not buy a car for me. I earned it by saving the money that I made at my part time job. I am happy with my life and have achieved a comfertable level of success. I am now 30 and an aerospace engineer. I can confidently say that I have earned everything that I have. I can honestly say that it feels damn good to look my boss in the eye when he hands me a paycheck and know that I earned every penny honestly.

I get $7 a week usually but it varies (yes, I am a teen still living off my parent's money :P). That's AU$ if you are from somewhere else. Most people when I was in early high school got between $4 and $10. Then there were the rich kids who got more than that (like $25 a week) but really you don't need that much when you are a young teen. By the later teens most people I know were working so earning more than that.

It truly depends on the situation, the teen, and the amount of responsibility of the teen. If the teen does chores does things around the house without moaning and groaning, they should get $20.00 weekly. If this teen argues, shows no respect, and will not do chores without arguing, $10.00 at the most. Do not give an irresponsible teen too much money because there is a chance that drug or alcohol will come into the picture

An allowance is good way to teach teens the value of money. The answer depends on what your teen wants/needs in attention to what you are providing for them. Make sure to give them a few bucks more than you think is fair for allowance and teach them about investments. Let's say you give the kid(s) $20 a week... give them $25 and make them put that extra $5 into an account that will help them earn interest and teach them good lessons about savings and investments for long term goals. The allowance will teach them about short term goals. Your love will teach them about love.

Damn! When I was growing up, I didn't get an allowance for helping around the house! It was a given that if you lived under mom's roof, you needed to help out... I mean, come on... getting paid for cleaning my own room, or cleaning the bathroom I took a shower in or the kitchen I had my meals in?????

My sisters and I had a chore schedule on the fridge, so EVERYONE helped out, and every day we had a different task. That taught us responsibility...

I had to complete chores around the house, and when I didn't I lost a dollar from my $10 a week allowance. As I got older and the chores increased it went up to $15.

Depends on age, before I got a car I got about $30 a week, now with a car I'm getting about $60 to help pay for gas.

It really depends on the economic status of the family. I used to get forty dollars every two weeks. That would pay for my school lunches and any supplies I needed. If I had money left over I could buy myself things.
