Recently, I asked my Mum to get me some drawers from Ikea... I already have a closet but it only has one shelf and I don't like hanging my clothes from coat hangers as it's slow and annoying. Upon hearing this, my Dad and my older Sister said that I should be buying my furniture because I'm 17 and I have a job. It's true, I am 17 and I do have a job... but is it REALLY expected of a 17 year old kid to buy his own FURNITURE to put his own CLOTHES in? Personally I think they have issues... what does everyone else think?

18, Male Gay Yes, I know how you feel. I just turned 18 a week ago. Months ago I had planned that when I turn 18 I was going to tell my parents I'm gay but that didn't work out. I was SOOO close to telling them...I started breaking out crying. They told me what the Heck was wrong? I told them a Friend Passed away. It was so wrong of me to do that. I tried evey possible way of telling them but I just never have the guts. ..I know I'm not really helping but If you do tell someone, go with your Mom first. I believe it will be easier if you tell a Sibling. do you have any brothers or siters??

No,not wrong, but the answer to this is all about perception. If your Mum chooses to purchase it for you and you are comfortable accepting it-then it works for the two of you. If your father and sister are uncomfortable with that decision you can either choose to handle it differently OR let them deal with their own "issues". Just try to be gracious if it is given to you and someday you can buy your Mum something special! Good Luck!

Buy your own furniture at 17? WTF?!!!!

I had a job at 17 too, but I sure as hell wasn't expected to buy my own furniture. Maybe for my car & insurance, but that's a different matter.

My mother buys me things and I am 46 years old. Appreciate the gift and tell everyone else to get over it and appreciate that your mother has the giving spirit more than at just one time of the year. Since you live in your parents house, you shouldn't be the one buying things for it unless you feel like giving them things.

When I was 17 I didn't live at home with my parents, I bought what I needed at the thrift store, or estate auctions.

I think you should get off your spoiled lazy butt and call your mum up to meet you at the furniture store so the both of you can go drawer hunting. YOUR MONEY.

if your living wif your parents, either way is ok, but if your living outside, you should be paying for your own funiture. But you can get your mom to pay it for you 1st and return her later, like a loan without the interest.

I think you should buy your own as you have a job. Unless of course your mum offers to pay for it. But you should not ask them to pay for you.
