While Philly is really cool place with tons of things to do on any give day, it can be dangerous to those who are not cautions.

North Philly, Port Richmond, West Philly and parts of South Philly (just outside of center city) are the worst locations (high drug activity, crime, murders, etc).

There are many safe locations out in the Northeast (the far end of town), West Philly (near the city line), and some areas in the far northwest (Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill, Roxbourogh, Manayunk).

As with any big city, if one minds their surroundings, stay away from criminal activity, don't visit certain places after dark, lock up home and cars (don't leave valuables in plain sight), one should be fine.

Philadelphia is not a dangerous city. Violence is almost all drug-related and concentrated in certain areas that I'm sure you won't be going to. Your dad is likely basing his opinion on the news which always give Philly a bad rap. Philly actually has a lot to offer, and it's a shame that people who have never been here run around calling it dangerous. I have lived here 3 years and my fiance 5. Neither of us have ever felt unsafe or been a victim of any kind of crime even though we both work in "bad" neighborhoods. You are going to be with a group of people in a safe part of the city, so there is absolutely nothing to worry about.

well if u live in a bad neighboorhood than yes Philadelphia is not a relatively safe city. i live in university city and it is safe. the only thing i would worry about around here in uni city is the car break ins. our car has gotten briken in 5x this year. rittenhouse square is kinda/relatively safe expect i think there is high rape crime in that area. if u want 2 live close 2 Philadelphia the suburbs r way safer though.

It seems as though your reasearch has given you a bias. All large cities can be dangerous, you just have to know how to take care of yourself to avoid it. Philadelphia is huge, consisting of several boroughs and towns. Just because there is a high crime rate, I wouldn't call it "dangerous". Theres nothing scary about it if you know how to get around in a large city.

It is the citizens who make a city a pleasant or a dangerous place to live in! If it is really the latter, the causes for that should be identified and rooted out to make the place really a pleasant one to live in!

i was born raised and insha allah will die in Philly. things happen here just as it does everywhere else. sometimes when you have political corruption, the crime is more televised than most. also, the streets are the worst place to be. when you do wrong, the streets are not your friend. there are also bad incidences where innocent bystanders were wounded or killed. that was unfortunate but life is good here for me
