I think whilst you have obviously tried to make ammends it is obvious that you will not be able to sustain this .

You friend has to accept some responsibility for the accident.
He should not have lent you the car in the first place if it was under insured/ not insured or you were not covered.

he also shares the liability if allowed you to drive it if you were unlicenced or on a restricted permit.

Did you ask to drive it or did you drive because he couldnt ie drunk, was he in the car and encouraging you to drive outside you level of skill or dio manouvres best not done an a public road, or speed?

It also depends on the accident , were you at fault? it could be that there is an option to claim against the other driver.

My advice, stop paying for anything , ask your friend to make an insurance claim and state that you will pay for the excess and penalties.

If he is unable to do that or will not then you should get some legal advice, I believe that you have a liability but it is not 100% yours.

Put an end to this , if that means ending the friendship as well so be it . I think you are being taken advantage of.

Dude..... You f@cked up good! Talk to an attorney. Seems to me like there is a thing about your own insurance covering it. This is something you might check in to. I'm not yanking your chain here, this is true!!! In some states your own insurance would have to cover you friends car, so check on it.
Glad I could help. Good Luck!!!

do what you can. th other guy is right your friend has to accept some responsibility. he shouldn't have let anyone use the car if
1. it wasn't insured for that
2. if he wasn't prepared to part with the vehicle should something happen

you did what you could got him a car, give him the 3000 if you want. is he really short on money he can't afford a new car? i wouldn't take 3000 from any of my friends i know they don't have it. but if they owed it to me i'd take 300/month no problem

you could buy him a new (or used) one instead of the rental. i don't think the insurance will pay anything unless you're on the policy along with the car.
