I noticed that when a non-spanish speaking person enters the room, all of a sudden the people in there are speaking spanish. My friend from Puerto rico says it's true that they will talk badly in front of you in spanish without you knowing it.
Also , a white guy told me that when he worked with mexicans on the job they would talk about him and he spoke fluent spanish. So is this GENERALLY true?

yes it's true and it's very rude. but what do you expect from third world society people. they think you are the inferior one when we all know that in this country they are the inferior ones , it just makes them feel good about therselves since they don't have alot to be proud about. ya know.

Probably. But it doesn't just happen with spanish-speaking people. I am a puertorrican and I was on an elevator once and these 2 white guys thought that I didn't speak english because I had a PR t-shirt on. Suddenly they started attacking puertorricans. I didn't say anything in the moment but when I got off the elevator I said, in my perfect english of course: "You guys have a good day and I'm sorry you feel that way about puertorricans."

No. Spanish speakers are more likely to talk about something that they are interested in, so they may be making comments about you, but not necessarily negative comments. Perhaps you have just met some ill-mannered people if you are sure they are saying something bad about you.

Also if two people are native speakers of the same language and they want to talk to each other (but not necessarily other people around) it's natural for them to want to talk to each other in that language because both people are more comfortable speaking that language. But this isn't usually intended to be an insult to you or make you feel left out. It's just that you're not part of the conversation, so there's no need to speak in English.

That's the feeling when you don't understand other language, but that doesn't happen a lot. Spanish speaking people feel more comfortable speaking Spanish with other Spanish speaking people, if you have a problem with that, go and learn Spanish, so you will know what is been said around.

I know it does happen. Now that I understand a little bit of spanish I can get the drift of a conversation and know its about me. But it isnt always bad, and they dont know how much spanish I understand, so when they are talking about me I look at them and if I understand something they said I will make a comment or something so they know I understood.

Yes, it is true. My sisters new husband is a mexican and he was talking to his brother badly about me while I was there, BUT he didn't know that I also speak spanish, and when I started telling him what he thought, I know he wanted to die. I think if his face could have turned red, it would have! I loved it though!

It's happened to me before, I don't speak fluently, but I know the basics. It's so rude. I don't know if it's generally true or not. Ever see the Seinfeld episode where the Korean women at the nail shop were talking about Elaine? They were talking about her in front of her face..then she brought in a spy..

Personally...i speak spanish..and no it is not true...there are many things that people speaking in spanish can talk about...so don't be self conscious..unless the people don't like you..theeeeennnnn they might be talking about you..or they might not even waste their time talking about you...so it all depends!

some folks that speak another language begin to speak their language when they think no one can understand them only to keep the convo private. if you have no visile flaws and know your woek, why are you worried about what they are saying. or just ask them
