St. Nickolas was an early bishop in the Christian church(Roman Catholic)about, I think, the fourth, or fifth century. I believe he was from the Middle East in what is modern Turkey. He was famous for providing the dowery for the three daughters of a poor neighbor secretly so they could wed. He is the patron saint of sailors and children.
Kris Kringle, or Kristkind, is a German figure who gives toys to children. The name means Christ Child. It is another name for the same person. I.E. Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Pierre Noel, etc. All are based on the idea of St. Nickolas. So, yes, they are the same person.

Actually, St Nick was from Turkey, but he is not the same as kris kringle. Kris kringle was developed by the German Lutherans to compete with the Catholic tradition of St Nick. The kriskind was actually supposed to be the baby Jesus, but since most people can't imagine the baby Jesus flying around and delivering presents, it eventually transformed into an angel in the form of a young girl.
