In the olden days, when they started to use indoor plumbing, this was a room adjacent to the indoor facilities where ladies could go to fix their makeup and attire after using the facilities for natural functions. Think French Courtesans. Women in high fashion could not dress themselves and always had a ladies maid to assist, so there was an attendant in the "powder room" to assist since when visiting a Lady did not always bring her personal maid to assist her in re-dressing after using the facilities. It took on the name because at the time most all makup worn by ladies was powder based. In this case, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (A truly wionderful movie by the way), in high end establishments, for both men and women, there was an attendant, and it was customary to tip the attendant, which is why she needed the money. Note that during the movie she asks for money for two reasons, the ladies room attendant and cabfare. Audrey Hepburn was QUITE the BABE, and did you know all of her clothes in the movie were Givenchy (sp?) creations designed for her and her alone specifically for the roles she played? No wonder that little black dress of hers looked So good!

Powder room is where you go to redue your makeup and what people normaly do in a toilet. Many of the classy places hve people there to help the cients with their makeup or hair and even help them change clothes. The fifty was a tip for such service.

Many years ago and even now in some fancy places, the powder room actually was attached to the women's bathroom. It was a place ladies could go and sit and freshen their makeup and hair. Hence "they would go Powder their nose"

the powder room, historically, was the room in a brothel where the ladies would re-apply their makeup after tending to a customer. often times, the customer would leave the money in there as they left, letting the lady find it when she entered.

i havent seen the movie but it is either because she was a whore and did her business in there or because since it is an upscale place, you could pay to get perfume etc, or pay tips to attendees for helping you with whatever, sometimes the tip jars would be unattended and so the money would get taken. either way she didnt get the money in a good way.
