Brahmanya is correct. You have to take a circuitous route to reach Mangalore, from Banglore. I think the project to link it with a direct route, has not been taken up in the right earnestness, which it deserves.

No. As on date there is no train between Bangalore and Mangalore. If you are particular to travel by train only then you may have to go up to Jolarpet or Salem and change to Madras Mangalore Express. Please check the Time Table for train timings.

Are you looking for this near furture? Currently there is no train
From March 2007 Govt plans to introduce a train via Mysore, Hassan. Which runs nearly 13 hours. There are plenty of buses plying between Blore to Mlore via Hassan the route is also good and it is a NH. Only during monsoon avoid travelling to Mlore by buses which makes the journey tedious.
If you have to get train go to Erode in TN which is 300 KMs away from Blore from there lot of trains like CHE - Mlore Exp, Mail, Trichirapalli - Mlore Train available everyday. From Blore Erode is around 6 to 7 hrs journey and from there Mlore is around 10 Hrs journey. Check the connectivity between the trains
