No! Emo is only the way that some kids want to portray themselves these days!! It's the same as punk,nerd ,jock, freak,etc.etc.etc.

Well they always live in darkness literally and figuratively. The literal sense is when they are sitting in the corner of their dark room cutting themselves while crying and listening to Hawthorne Hights. And the figurative sense being their own perspective that the world is "dark". I hope this answers the question.
