I occassionally have the same problem.
I do two things:
1) Tools > Options > Downloads > Download bandwidth...
...nudge this away from the 100% maximum
2) In taskmanager (Ctrl-Alt-Del or Ctrl-Shft-Esc)...
Processes tab
Select Limewire and then right click
Set Priority > BelowNormal

This keeps me able to continue other things easily, and only slows the downloads bandwidth a small bit.

Hope that helps.

limewire contains trojans, spyware and even a few worms. If you use limewire it is wise to run a virus scan and spykiller etc...after. Better still, find a new p2p

every time i use limewire, i have to run "spybot search and destroy" afterwards. Even though norton wont let me download a bad file, there is tons of nagging spyware on every file i download. My pc slows way down also.
