What happened to the girl from MI 2 Why is she not in the third movie

Every "chapter" of MI, "should" have a different girl, like the James Bond saga.
Nothing happened to the girl, they just have to tell a "different-but-not-so-different" story.
Wait and see MI 4 will have a different girl, moreover, Ethan "could" be single again, you can expect anything.
