It is definitely the motor bearing going bad. The bearing is hot and dry and tight after doing a load of clothes and will not start. When it is allowed to cool off it will start with a grumbling noise and until it gets hot again in about 20-30 minutes it seizes up and stops. This will keep happening and the amount of time it will run will shorten until it seizes up completely and will not start.
You have three options. Replace the motor yourself. Call a repairman to replace it. Get a new dryer.

If possible, put some dish soap on where ever you smell the odor. If it is gas you want to get rid of it. You probably want toget rid of it any way. As for the dryer, are you cleaning the lint trap, after at least every 2 loads. Are you over loading it? Can you open the door and push in the little thingy that locks the door,to see if it is tumbling? Sounds like your belt is getting worn. That is if it is heating right. Check your belt, if it isn't the belt, it maybe the timer. Good luck.

1. Check to see if the dryer vent in the back of the machine is not blocked or squished. It may just be off on high limit. Air flow is very important. Check your lint filter too. If it is hampered somehow it should reset once it cools down.
2. Your heating element is broken.
3. Timer is broke.
4. Sears is having a half price sale as we speak right now. You can get a new one for about $200 bucks!

When you say it stops, do you mean it stops tumbling the clothes? Yet the heat is still on? If so, you have a belt that needs to be replaced.
Call the Amana service center and see what they say. They are usually very good about troubleshooting with you, even on an appliance that is off warranty.

i agree with kirk d. it is probably the motor. you may be able to do it your self but it can be aggravating. if you decide to do it your self make sure you unplug the power cord. i also recommend changing the belt as long as you are at it. check the idler wheels, if they have play on the axle they should be change to. at least clean and oil them.

sounds like a broken/loose belt in the dryer. take a look. if not, it's 7 years old - maybe time for a new one.

You probably ought to have it checked. It could be a short. It could be the heating element. It could be the motor, etc. The answer up there about the belt is a good one.

Good hair dryers aren't expensive. Get a new one instead of wasting your time letting it sit. No offence. Just saying.

You have a bad motor... Does the smell resemble lighter fluid? If so that concures my diagnosis...
