I am a networking student but am still not sure about the difference between the two. I like to think i am pretty good at networking but for some reason i guess i wasn't paying attention the day we discussed this. Also, if you all could give me one good tip in the networking field that just might help me out one day i would appreciate that.

In circuit switching, the path is decided before transmitting and in packet switching each individual packet can go in any path depending on the traffic in the path.In circuit switching, there is chance of loss of data as the data is sent in same path and whole data is sent at the same time,so when there is loss of data u have to retransmit again the whole block,so this leads to time consumption. In packet switching, each individual packet can go in different path,so in case of failure of packets, particular packet is only retransmitted.

this r basic information abt the switching concepts.

Circuit switched is a accrual electrical connection to complete the circuit path from source to destination (old style phone systems are a good example). Packet switched is the data gets routed to a specific address by addressing embedded in the data (TCPIP or voice over ip are good examples,, though voip can be implemented with tcpip).
