To kill scale use white oil or a systemic pesticide such as confidor, ants spread and farm scale - so if you see them on your plants you will know that scale is appearing.
Mites can be controlled with sulphur, miticides and predatory mites.
Use a fertiliser high in potassium as it will strengthen the cell walls within the plant, making it more difficult for sap sucking insects to feed

I spray the plants with some dawn dish detergent (a couple squirts) and water mixed. works like a gem.

Improve plant vigour by fertillising mulching, re potting etc. If the little buggers still appear, try pyrethrum or white oil.

You can remove scale with cotton balls moistened with isopropyl alcohol. I use dysiston (systemic insecticide) when bad bugs threaten my plants. Nurseries have dysiston.
