If you want coast: may / june. The further south, the warmer. Catalunya is a lot milder, though July/August is hot mostly everywhere.
If interior: Spanish Pirinees (province of Lerida, for ex.) are espectacular any month in summer. Basque provinces and Galicia are beautiful in spring too, but less sun than Mediterranean coast.
If you want to see major cities: Madrid and Barcelona (take day trips to Toledo, etc.) in spring and June; Seville in Easter (but a bit crazy).
September is also a good bet for Mediterranean; cheaper, milder, and less crazy, but shorter days, colder nights, and many places close.
Remember: unless you are a local, August is to be avoided!!!

April, May and June. September is still a good month, less crowded and cheaper air tickets.
July is already hot and August forget it, as on top it gets too crowded.

Everyone goes in the summer and it can be really hot, so try going in the off season. Airfare is a lot cheaper that way too.
