My AP Physics class and I watched a three-part mini-series over string theory over the past few days and I was wondering what other people thought about it.

To me it seems a classic example of "theory out of control", that is, where theory gets so far ahead of experiment that there's no way that you can tell whether what you're doing is right or not. The further you develop the theory (in the absense of experimentation), the greater the chances that you're gonna make a mistake. I mean, is it just me or are there other people that are slightly uncomfortable with the notion of there being 11 dimensions "just because the maths says that there are"?

As I've pointed out before, at the very least, string theorists have made incredible predictions in mathematics using their physical intuition. Given that many of these conjectures have been proven true, it stands to reason that there must be something to string theory.

Sam G is completely right- there is a certain point where a theory becomes too cumbersome, and raises more questions than answers. It is conjecture, not science.

Yea that Brian Greene do good job explaining really crazy concepts. It's really emerging field that is developing and have much room to grow.

I think it is fascinating, brilliant, and somewhat incomprehensible.
