1.) When you have a miscarriage early in your pregnancy, is it possible you won't need to get a D&C? How early would you have to be (in terms of weeks)?
2.) Is there such a thing as being too far along for a D&C, and if so how many weeks would that be? And what else would have to be done?

Thanks!

You can fully miscarry without medical intervention at any stage in a pregnancy. (Granted a late term miscarriage will need to be overseen by a physician in a hospital setting)

I believe a D&C is not recomended for removal of the actual fetus (or embryo if before 12 weeks gestation) after 16 weeks. A D&C can be performed at any time after a miscarriage at any gestational age to ensure that all parts of the pregnancy are removed, including the placenta.

As far as what more would need to be done, it really depends on the situation. Each woman is very different as is each case. Generally a miscarriage will go one of these ways.

Complete Miscarriage, where the woman's pregnancy spontaniously aborts. The fetal or embryonic tissues can be passed whole or in a series of clots. All pregnancy tissues are either passed or reabsorbed into the body and no medical intervention is needed.

Partial Miscarriage or Incomplete Miscarriage, where the woman's body is able to expel only some of the pregnancy, leaving behind parts of the placenta, gestational sac or fetal/embryonic tissue. A D&C and antibiotics are normally the remedy for this.

Fetal or Embryonic Death, where the woman's body does not expel (or reabsorb if early enough in gestation) the pregnancy at all. If before 16 weeks a D&C can be considered. Most hospitals will induce labor in pregnancies over 20 weeks and the miscarriage would be completed in a hospital setting. A Certificate of Death is not needed until after 20 weeks gestation in most states.

I'm not sure about being to far along for the D&C but i had a miscarriage at 5 weeks and did not recieve one. Apparently i am fine, i am not 26 weeks pregnant with this pregnancy and we are both doing well. When i had my miscarriage it was 4 years ago and i didnt get pregnant again until now. I wasn't told anything about a D&C so i assumed i did not need one. I dont know if i helped but good luck to you.

I am not sure on the being to far along part, but for the first question. If it is early enough in the pregnancy the the baby would be dissolved back into the uterus wall. I know that sounds bad, but I myself just went through it. I only had small bits come out with the bleeding so that was the only way I knew I had misscarried. I would say I was around 4-6 weeks if that when it happened and a D&C was not needed..

You can have a miscarriage without needing a d&c. Basically if your body is able to expel all the products of conception (fetus and placenta) then there would be no need for a d&c. I had a friend who was 13 weeks pg and the baby died. She was induced and was able to expel the fetus but had to have a d&c because the placenta was stuck. Basically it just comes down to what your body is able to do. If you leave any of it in you chance infection.

1. No -I had a miscarriage at 5 weeks and did not require a D&C or medication.

2.If it was too late they would induce you to have the fetus.

I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks & they did not do a D&C, just watched me close & did several internal ultrasounds to make sure all fetal tissue had passed. My friends baby died at 22 weeks, she was induced and had to deliver the baby. I am not sure at what time you have to deliver, sorry

I don't think it has anything to do with how far along you are, sometimes everything passes and sometimes it doesn't... Too far along for D & C after 12 weeks if you are looking to abort a healthy baby but you can need a D & C after losing a baby anytime of the pregnancy...

i miscarried at 8 weeks and had to have a d&c...i'm not sure what's the earliest you can miscarry and not have one. I think you can be too far along for one but not sure how long for that either.
