The largest (nation) state in the world by land area is Russia. The largest (nation) state in the world by population is China. See the link for 2006 population figures.

I'm not sure how accurate third world is to these countries. During the cold war the Soviet Union would have been considered second world. You can decide for yourself if you now consider Russia third world. With its military might, I wouldn't. As for China, if it is still third world at all, it is rapidly growing out of it. It has a very large and growing economy.

India is the largest nation on earth (by population), recently overtaking China. It used to be considered Third World but this may not be as applicable today.

There really isn't such a thing as third world whole states inside the U.S. There is definitely homelessness and poverty, but we're not thid world. Go study, stupid.
