I install them for a living and Belkin has the best signal quality if they are configured correctly. Don't user channel 6 or 11 and do set a channel manually. Belkin N or Pre-N are great routers.

I've used the Linksys WRT54G, and I'm not to terribly impressed with it. I've had issues where it loses internet connectivity and gets a DHCP lease from it's own table on the WAN connection. It's a pain in the butt to go back and fix it every once and a while, especially for someone who is more of a computer neophyte.

If you are looking for something friendly, then Microsoft used to have some networking hardware that worked okay. I had (I think) the MN-500. It was an 802.11b model, and I'm not sure if they had a g version available.

The next time I get one I'm going to try a netgear. I'm pretty impressed with the specifications, and despite their low cost, I've never had any issues with their products in the past. Netgear is the old Bay Networks, which used to be Lattice Net. Lots of network hardware history, for what it's worth.

As of right now, I am using a Linksys 802.11G router and I'm a few rooms away from the router as well and it works fine for me. I've heard that N technology isn't as developed as it should be, so you should wait a while before considering buying those routers.

Anyway, stick with G right now, since manufacturers label their products with "pre-N" or promise high transfer speeds, but the jury isn't out just yet. Better to be safe than sorry and go with G.

wired routers are much cheaper then wireless routers. on a wireless routers people in the neighborhood can steal your connection and add themselves to your network stealing bandwidth . A wired router are more secure.
