I installed the language pack for Japanese on WindowsXP but when I try to type, I only get katakana and it is not the right keyboard layout. For example, if I type number '4', I get 'ウ' which is katakana 'U'. I want the 'U' key to be katakana 'U'. And it won't show hiragana either. I'm so confused and irritated; can someone please help? I tried the MSHelp site but they make it so bloody difficult to email them that I gave up.

If you only installed the IME, then you have a different keyboard specified in the IME Properties box.

To Fix:

Open the language bar, choose Japanese, select the tools icon, in the menu that opens select Properties, and in the pop-up dialogue box that appears, select the Tab that says General.

On this page, you will see a title heading that says Template, and below that 3 boxes, each with an arrow on the right. The top box is labeled Key Template, and should show Microsoft IME.

Other things this box might show are: ATOK, IME 97, VJE, or WX. Each of these changes the way the Keyboard responds to the IME. If it says anything other that Microsoft IME, you need to change it.

Click on the right arrow and display the list of choices, and click on Microsoft IME. All three boxes should say Microsoft IME.

Now look down for the title heading that says Input. Under the word input are 6 boxes and the first one is input method. That must read Romaji Input, not Kana Input. You can change this by using the arrows on the right side of the boxes, as explained above.

After you do this, click "Apply" at the bottom of the dialogue box, then click OK. Then close all your applications and reboot your PC. (This is a precaution).

Now test it. If it still doesn't work, email me through answers and we can try to fix it.
