It made you break out more?
That's hard to believe. I had a friend with only small spots of acne and she swore by Proactiv. But the company was a bunch of jerks and sent her to a collection agency for money they charged her _after_ she had already cancelled her subscription.
Anyway, I use Neutrogena On-The-Spot Treatment. It's always worked real well for me.
I wouldn't advise using Retin-A if your acne isn't that severe. I think it contains some rather scary toxic chemicals.

i hate proactiv! finally, someone else gets how horrible it is! hehe.
i would suggest going to a dermatologist and getting retin-a-micro.
but if you just have minor acne, try OXY brand cleansers and scrubs. you can get them at any drugstore or Target or Walmart -- anywhere basically. they're packed with benzoyl peroxide, which attacks acne bacteria, and salicylic acid, which actually opens up the pores.
i hope this works, take care! happy holidays.

dermatologist for sure! but be aware that anytime you change your skin clensing system you skin can break out just as a reaction to the change. . . did you keep with it long enough to make sure it wasn't just that? well if it wasn't then yes go to the dermatologist . . .btw retin-a made my skin dry and flakey and red . . .it is way to strong for mild acne. . . but over all to each his own. . . every face is different so each will react differently. . . you just gotta test everything and find your match :) good luck!

My daughter was usin proactive and it made her face really dry. i gave her a sample of Arbonne's "Intelligence" skin care system. It cleared her skin up, and left her face feelin moist instead of like dried leather!
I have samples if you'd like to try before you buy.
