Type out the words you want to put on the shirt, make them the right size. Get some printer paper that is used for transferring images onto material and print out the words onto that paper making sure that the image is reversed in the printer if you bought "iron-on-transfer-paper. Print it out, iron it on the shirt and bop on down the road.

Many ways to put on Words to a t-shirt but it seems the mention of the scanner is skewing all the responses to the iron on paper transfers.

The answers I see here are correct about the iron on technology, but sorry if that is done from a regular home/office ink-jet or laser printer, it will transfer to the garment -- but WILL NOT be colorfast to washing irrespective of the polymer coat. (Heat transfers for apparel are made from different inks - dyes or pigments as the case may be)

Whether from scanning, or by composing the words thru software - I would still use "Fabric Paints" available in all art shops for the colors.
Would either trace the pattern on to the Tee & hand-paint in with the colors, or simply cut a stencil to make the painting easier.

you can go down to AC Moore or Michael's and they have these kits that you can transfer words to shirts. you print the words out on transfer label. (you can just use your inkjet printer.) i think it might be an iron-on. while you're there you might as well pick up some of their cheap ($5) T-shirts in all kinds of colors.
