besides limewire, morpheus, bearshare. i need it to be free though so no itunes or zune.

I tried a few, imesh, limewire and ares. Ares was the best among these. I really like it. The other 2 came with spyware also, like imesh. The new ares, though has a program attached with it, but u can delete it afterwards. IT woudl say that it would effect ares, but it wont. I found ares to have much much more users and downloads. I have downloaded over 2gb of data on it, complete movies and songs. Go for Ares lite, less pc resources used.

The best free software I know of is LimeWire. There is an option to pay for LimeWire Pro, which has increased the number of results I get, but the basic software is free. It runs on multiple platforms and integrates nicely with iTunes.
If you are stuck behind a firewall, there are ways to change the settings in LimeWire to get around this.
The programmes you mentioned are all P2P - if you're not looking for that, and you don't want to pay to download per song, what category are you looking for?
