What ever happened to modesty and self-deprecation? Why do people let others get away with being so vain?

It can be attributed to the "American way". People pretty much follow the trends set in popular culture, i.e., tv, radio, internet, big brother, etc. and over the last two decades everything, all the "cool" people, celebrities and big money and politics, began driving the biggest cars, etc.
The way people display cell phones, as if anybody actually cares, is a good indication of how shallow and egocentric people have become.

Vanity is cool in the eye of the beholder and it's good for the Fashion business.

It supposedly shows your "self-confidence". Also, many books, speaking in the workplace, say you have to "toot your own horn" to get that job promotion, pay raise, or any sort of recognition.
People don't say anything because a) it's intimidating b) they think it would be rude to c) they don't notice.

I don't think we let anybody like that get away with it. I think we think people like that are hopeless. Waste of time. And too, it's entertaining to watch them make fools of themselves.
