I worked in a health food store for 10 years, and did an internship in a cardiology dept for a year (with behavioral med) this is what I have told everyone in all that time.

If it had a face, dont eat it. If it comes from something that had a face, dont eat it. (If you use milk, use skim milk) Limit eggs.

Ok, most people cant handle that - but try often.

Don't give up your favorite foods entirely - or you will hate life and sabotage all your good efforts by going back to your old ways or binging. Like a steak dinner? Have the filet in a much smaller portion. LIke cookies? Dont sit and eat half the bag while watching TV. Instead practice what Buddhists would call "conscious eating". Sit somewhere quiet, and take your time to enjoy said cookie bite by bite. Feel it - smell it - savor it. A cookie, or potato chips, or what have you go much further this way. Just do not bring butter into the house....I could go and on...but cutting fat is going to be a big part of it.

Also, increase your fiber intake with fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. Eat a bowl of high fiber cereal in the morning - this will help give you more steady energy during the day, but fiber has an additional benefit: it traps cholesterol already present in foods so that your intestinal tract doesnt have a chance to grab it.

If you go to a larger bookstore, they will have all kinds of books on the subject. I would recommend going to the cooking section and looking for books that are intended for diabetics (since they have the same essential problems dietarily) or those with the American Heart Association, or American Cancer Association Seal on them - those are books that I gaurentee you will have healthy recipes that are high in flavor, fiber, and vital nutrients, while being low in cholesterol, fat and other junk you dont need.

Here are a few to get you started:

Just remember - you didnt acquire a lifetime of bad eating habits overnight, it will take sometime to become adjusted to a new diet/lifestyle as well...

Oh - and I totally forgot to mention excercise....but thats enough for now...

Good luck

I lowered my cholesterol with niacin. Niacin however will make you flush like you were really hot. There is a no-flush niacin which I take everyday, and you can get at a health food store.
Niacin is a B vitamin. If you can take the flushing...which will go away after a few days...then you can take it and save a lot of money. The no-flush kind is a little pricey.
Along with niacin supplements you should eat food with a lot of fiber. Fiber tends to bond with the cholesterol and carries it on out with the bowel movements, so you really don't have to worry so much about the cholesterol in your food. This is a more natural way to get rid of it than taking expensive medicines that has serious side effects. Garlic also helps as someone has mentioned. If you don't like the taste there are garlic supplements that is mixed with parsley so that the breath isn't so bad.

4) Consult a naturopathic physician.

There are different takes on this issue. There is research that shows HIGH cholesterol is not a direct correlation with heart disease, i.e., there are plenty of people with very levels of cholesterol and NO heart disease AND plenty of people with low cholesterol AND that HAVE heart disease. If you look at many studies on this whole debate, you will find studies that say "we found a significant link between high cholesterol and heart disease". Then they report a correlation coefficient of 0.36, which would and should get you laughed out off your advisor's office.

There are two types of cholesterol: LDL (low-density lipoprotein - bad) and HDL (high-density lipoprotein - good). You want to raise the HDL with aerobic exercise and adding monounsaturated and polyunsaturated foods to your diet such as nuts, olive oil, canola oil, and seafood. Adding soluble fiber to your diet also helps; some foods include beans, potatoes, and fruit such as apples and bananas. Niacin helps raise HDL up to 30%; such foods include chicken, milk, eggs, mushrooms, leafy vegetables, tomatoes, beans and nuts.
