How do you test without taking it off? No smoke coming out or deposits in tailpipe.

A clogged converter can be hard to diagnose: I've seen a gage setup which drills a small hole in the exhaust and tests the back pressure. The hole is closed with a rivet.

If the car is really running bad and feels like it is "choked up" this will work: Remove the oxygen sensor. The exhaust will blow out of the hole and make a loud noise, but if the engine runs better then the converter is probably restricted.

Take the car to a mechanic and have it checked. Probably could tell you more if you posted what type of car, year, model, symptoms that would lead you to believe that the cat is not functioning... Anyhow most of the time if the exhaust comes out the tail pipe at a normal volume and the car does not hesitate, spit, sputter or stall out, your cat is working. Also, if your vehicle is new enough to have an obdII computer you can go to autozone and they will scan it for free. Usualy the check engine light would be on. Hope this helps

the converter when they go bad usally smell like rotten eggs ,thatl tell you its bad ,another thing is bang it with a mallet if it sounds like broken glass in it that means its broken .now if the car is inspected all ready find the size if the pipe that runs in and out of the converter and buy a peace of straight pipe a couple of inches bigger .cut the converter off on eather side and install the straight pipe with to muffler clamps.i did that to my truck 3 years ago and it still passes emmisions inspection legaly.just fill the car with a emmisions cleaner and 93 gas run that till you empty and fill it back up with 93 before you bring it to the station and it will pass emisions.

take your car to an emission center and they will put a probe up in your tail pipe and test it for you.
