It all started when I opened up "my computer" and started to look through all my files.
Nothing happened at all until I did this, and then my computer wanted to install its own anti-spyware called spy sheriff.
It makes me kind of skeptical, thinking maybe this is a part of the infection itself.

What should I do, but keep in mind I really don't want to drop any money for this.

thanks

Spy sheriff is fake, dont use it. Use these scans to remove it. These are both free.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

it's a malware, but not a virus. Spy sheriff is not that dangerous as virus can be, although it can be quite pesky. here is an instruction how to remove this spyware manually:
http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-spysheriff.html
this way you don't need to buy any anti-spyware. But remember, if you'll have antispyware, it will prevent things like spysheriff from coming on you computer.
