Society, especially commercials, make it seem that you're only someone important if you have someone. As a result, when there's more emphasis on being in a relationship, you start feeling like a cultural oddity.

The simple answer is that Valentine's Day is a lover's day, and the greeting card companies have capitalized on that. As a society, we have bought into that. The problem with all that is, of course, that those of us who don't have lovers feel bereft and somehow "left out" of things during that particular holiday. Is it any worse though, than now, at Christmas? I'm feeling a bit left out because everyone I'm around has a mate, and I don't.

It's based on social and peer pressure. Women and girls especially are made to feel that if they don't have a boyfriend on Valentine's Day they are unlovable. It's very sad, because Valentine's Day really is a commercial "holiday" and has nothing to do with anything other than buying cards, candy, flowers and jewelry.

Because Valentines day is all about love and romance. And for those who don't have someone to share it with it can be a lonely day.

They want someone to buy them a card, flowers, candy, etc... and show them some love. Basically- to not feel so alone on a day that celebrates partnership.

Because we're constantly being reminded that we don't have a "significant other".
Valentine's Day is overrated if you ask me.
