our family doesn't really dress formal, but I wanted to wear something decent..maybe like a red sweater vest or should i wear a white shirt and red tie, or other.....what would be something nice a guy would wear..Thanks.

Wear black dress pants, a white shirt, a nice tie, and if you wanted to wear the sweater vest, then this would be nice also.

If there is a Burlington's Coat Factory in your area.. go there!
But I agree a nice shirt and some Khakis from Lands End would be nice. A sweater may not do it. But a nice pair of slacks and a shirt with a nice tie would be ideal. But try not to over dress.
Go out tomorrow and try on a few things. Ask for help from a salesman. You may even have something in your closet already that will do just the trick.. Remember the goal is keep it casual and be comfortable.

from what your saying, i suppose your family doesn't dress too casually too... So i suggest a dark denim with a white top. The dark denim is not too casual like washed out, and the white top cause it can be casual or not depends on what and how you wear it. most guy have alot of choices of white tops in their wardrobe, so its easy for you to choose the one that you look best in. I think i would suit you, if your style is like that of your avatar...
