I just read this question in USA Today and in all, I believe that is no appreciation for history and that being said is an oxymoron because we have teachers that are young who don't know their history and are attempting to re-write it. There's a lack of dignity, respect and compassion- the underlying problem is attitude and that I find to be sad in the country I love in. I haven't seen Flags of our Fathers, and really like to.

as a part of the new generation Id say maybe. Reason why maybe is because it depends on what side of the fence you've grown up on. One side of the fence you have the rich people who's children would NEVER get sent out on the frontlines they would be put into a college like harvard sorta like our president did "cough draft dodger cough". On the other side of the fence you have the poor redneck minorites who go into the armed forces to pay for college or to get career training a very small few go to fight for their country most of them go for personal reasons like i said before that are dressed up in the patriot flag. so to your answer no this generation for the majority doesnt know the sacrifice of war. my grandfather who served in ww2 his generation knew the sacrifice and they fought because they had to. Not because the president pushed the US into a situation of war with false information.

as compared to what?
I don't know if anyone really understands it, unless they have been there...
I mean, you could say that past generations understood it better because so many more went to war... like in WWII...
but in today's modern military, it doesn't take quite the manpower to wage a war... so maybe that many people don't truely understand it...

As part of the new generation, I would have to say No. It doesn't seem real to most people. It's just something you watch on TV or read about. Unless you are actually there or experience a loss yourself, it is hard to comprehend.
