If I had to pick one that is better than any other I would have to say original Star Wars trilogy. Other ones that are not far behind are Lord of the Rings and Back to the future.

Given Hollywood's history that sequels rarely do well, the few triliogies that HAVE done well and are my favs are: The Matrix, X-Men and Back To The Future. All three examples were well written and enterwoven between films.
Historically, based on the box office and marketing sales records it's made--along w/ other firsts in film, George Lucas' 6 episode Star Wars series tops the list, given the bonus it took nearly 30 years to complete.

The Godfather - the first two films won the Academy Awards for Best Picture of the year (1970 and 1972 respectively) amongst many, many other awards --Directing, Acting-- and the third was also nominated many too. It has something to say, and watching it time after time you discover something new and just absolutely fascinating.
