Candles are always a nice gift. Exspeially if the power goes out. But with 2 kids too, you might want to get something everyone in the family and do, like board game, vidieo's , DVD movies, that the whole family and enjoy over and over again....

You can do a "Movie Night Bucket" ..
You can paint little popcorn kernels on a Plastic Bowl and add " The Smiths Popcorn" (or even a cardboard box to resemble movie popcorn)
Add candy , twizzlers, raisinettes, etc. (6 boxes) a few bags of microwaveable popcorn and a gift certificate for Blockbuster.. enough for at least two movie rentals.. If the kids are young maybe a few crazy straws...

Since this is a new couple it will give them an evening together at home, they'll have to pick the movies together and make popcorn etc...it will help them bond more as a family

You didn't say how old the kids the kids are, but I am putting together an emergency car kit for my daughter and her husband who are expecting a baby soon. My heart when I heard about the gentleman from the Bay are who was trying to seek help for his family and was found deceased in the cold snow. It's not a very exciting gift but if it's ever needed, they'll know you cared.

Candles are good, although the kids won't enjoy them very much. You could get them a nice set of cookies or chocolate. Or you could get them a family game, like scene it or monopoly, or you could get the a DVD of a family movie.

How about a gift basket. Get a Movie Rental card from your local movie renting hub and throw some candy popcorn, and pop in there.
