The answer to that lies within our own spirits. Some don't believe in God, yet isn't it better to believe simply because you feel it than to doubt because of our science? If Man created (or discovered) science, then what proof do we have that any of it is right? And while there's no proof that God exists, is there any proof that he doesn't? I'd say God exists, but not as so many might see Him - I believe God to be like any Father or person - whatever you do, He's right there with you; He joins you in the things you enjoy, such as travelling or reading. For example, when I play a video game, I feel God's presence as though he's sitting beside me guiding me through the game. So it's not really about the mind (or brain) "knowing", but what we believe and what our hearts feel - it's about the soul "feeling" God's presence all around us, as a part of His own spirit is always within us.

One cannot validate the existence of God. The very act of validating God would--ironically, invalidate Him.
This is why:
God is an entity that is infathomable by human beings. He represents perfection, infinity, the universe, and much beyond human comprehension. Humans oblige God through worship and belief as well as faith. These acts suffice as acknowledgement, not comprehension.
In order to validate God, one would have to bring God into the realm of human comprehension. If one could prove the existence of God so that humans could understand, He would no longer be an enigma. This would accordingly cancel his claim on being infinite, perfect, and beyond human understanding.
Thus, validating God and 'really knowing' God both work against the deification of God by anchoring him to human knowledge.
Consequently, in order for God to be God, God must be 'believed' and never known. The moment God becomes knowable is the moment He is no longer God.

The very fact that we can have these thoughts and this discussion, that we are all given free will to either accept or deny that we are all interconnected within the universe, that we are not separate from God, is one way of knowing that God is real.
Become a channel of peace and love in the world for a week (or hopefully longer) and see how beauty will flow into your life. Then you will begin to know, and not just believe, God exists.

We don't "know". Those who believe in him have "faith" in him.
Even those who tell you that all you have to do is look around and look at how the world is in order is proof, are missing quite a LOT of questions. Are they saying that if there are no laws of physics then there would be no God? And yet they believe in miracles don't they? Are they referring to how the world seems to take care of us? Maybe until the next large asteroid. And even if there is a watch in the middle of the dessert, does it prove that the watchmaker is the God we know in the bible?
If you are looking for God based on human rational thought alone, you will hit a dead end. No one, and I mean no one has ever been able to prove it logically. If you are to believe in God, you must make a leap of faith.

YOU CAN'T KNOW! It is impossible to know, you can believe all you want that there is a god bt you will never know unless god was to speak to you. You can only know things that are in your known universe and God is obviously not a part of this place because you can't know if god is real.

To know God, we must Know ourself.
What we know, is that we exist within the Moment of Now.
How do we know?
We experience every moment that Life surrounds us with.
And what we experience, brings forth an emotion within us.
That very moment, we decide what to focus on. What we decide to focus on, is what we will experience next.
So every single moment, is defined by the emotion we feel .
In this Knowing , of how we feel, makes one realize that it is our emotion that is our actuall individual Reality.
This tells us, that we are an emotion. wich is E+Motion =Emotion.
Energy in motion.
What ever we wish to believe, we will experience. For what ever we feel , is real.
God exists within the moment of Love. Within the feeling of Love.
If you want to know God, then know Love.
The proof of God, is when we Feel happy and Know that feeling is God Within Us.
When we do not feel this, we do not feel god. and so it does not exist when we choose for it not too.
We exist so that God may have a chance of existing.

How can that be answered until we first determine what God is, and, more generally, what it is for anything to be real?

We know by reading the Bible and deciding for ourselves if we can truly believe in a being beyond our comprehension. Some can't, some are too "young" to accept and understand about a superior being (like Joe Frid from above). I asked myself the same question recently and its just something you have to decide for yourself. If you truly believe, then you will know.
