Let's say you're working with a new group of people who don't seem to respect you (for whatever reason). How do you command respect from them?

Ok, maybe I didn't make myself clear on the question. Let's say that you were totally new to a team, and you are the project manager of this team. There is no time for you to earn your respect. You need to get them up and running immediately. How do you demand respect in this type of scenario?

You can not command their respect. If you try, that will make the team resent you even more. Let you leadership skills work for you. You must have some kind of track record in a similar position, otherwise the company would not have put you in that role. Let the team know that you are no different from them and that you are willing to "get your hands dirty" right along with them. Let your work speak for you. I assume that since you are coming from the outside, that there are people on the team that felt they should have your position instead of the company going with an "outside" man. In their eyes you are the enemy and you will have to work at getting them to see that you are on their side. Only then will you begin to gain respect from them.

You earn respect. Going around with the name "Mr Main Event" might not be the best strategy! LOL
Try a Dale Carnegie book: How to Win Friends and Influence People. Look at people not as resources to control, but as partners to help in getting to a common goal. When you respect people, they respect you back. The jobs I've enjoyed most are the ones where I received respect from my superiors.

When it comes to respect, generally, if you respect yourself and respect others you get respect. Sometimes, as in the case of parents with children, you have to tell the children what you'll accept in terms of how they talk to you.
I don't know if my answer will be enough, but if I were in that situation I'd say to the people, "One thing we need to agree on is that if we're going to be effective we need to respect one another's ideas and respect one another. As project leader, I want you to know that I will respect all you and will respect any input you offer. At the same time, I'd like to ask that you that you treat me with similar respect."
The project leader may want to talk to people individually (if the group isn't too big), and after the above "speech" ask if they have any concerns or issues with the project that they want you to know.
Or - you could get everyone together if it doesn't appear respect is happening and tell them that you're not happy with the lack of respect - and then give the above speech. You don't have to be whiney or complaining or rude or demanding. Just calmly point out that its a problem.
Tell people, too, that you want to hear their concerns and issues related to the project. If you're willing to listen to them they'll be more willing to listen to you.

As you know respect is earned not given, you need to show this new team that you are a team player, that you wouldn't ask them to do something that your not willing to do. Show by example , a good leader was first a good follower.

By showing them respect and earning their trust. Many make the mistake of confusing respect with fear. I would avoid using fear tactics in an attempt to earn respect. It may sometimes feel like respect, but they will secretly try to undermine your authority or reputation.

You need to understand that respect is EARNED, not commanded. That is probably why they don't respect you.
If you want to earn it, you need to treat all of them with respect. Go above and beyond in your job. That way they know that you work hard and that you understand how they feel.
