Why is freedom of speech so embraced by some, and then detested when it's used against them?

Why is it OK to criticize a person in a high office of our government, but not others because they're of a different political affiliation?

Hypocrites, in general, are not very bright people. If a person is capable of understanding the importance of freedom of speech, (s)he will very likely embrace it in all ways, not just when it's beneficial to oneself. Rather than getting angry, if you can, explain the value of freedom of speech, and that a lack of it is fascism. Stalin was a fascist, and so was Saddam Hussein, they killed people who openly disagreed with them. Explain that democracy is about compromise, it's about accepting what our neighbors believe and what they say, whether we believe, or not. And, that a large part of growing up and being a mature adult in *any* human society is accepting that we cannot always get what we want, and that we can never force another person to believe exactly the things that we believe.

Many don't seem to understand freedom of speech. Some think freedom of speech means there will be NO consequenses of unpopular speech.

The Dixie Chicks have the freedom to say whatever they want about Bush & those who disagree have the freedom to never buy thier albums again, even going so far to say they will change the station if a Dixie Chicks song comes on.

Mel Gibson has the freedom to go on a drunken anti-semite rant. Those offended have a right to never support a Mel Gibson movie ever again.

Freedom of speech goes both ways!

I never said anyone was more fair game than anyone else. I do complain about the personal attacks I see so many of here. When someone, anyone resorts to those tactics, they are proving to the rest of us the only way they can win a discussion is with slander, without the brains to debate the subject matter itself. And I sometimes give better than they gave. THEY ask for it.

You can only criticize them if I agree with you...just kidding. Just seems like an excuse for some to report abuse.

I usually can laugh off anything except bigotry...then I get a bit heated.

Because everyone is hypocritical. It sucks, but unfortunately, that's the way the world works.

Right on. A liberal can call the President Hitler, but if I call a liberal a terrorist sympathizer, he tattles.
