D: The plantations tended to use slash and burn idea of agriculture. They needed large numbers of slaves to cultivate fields that were used for about two to three years and then abandoned and new fields found. That was why if you were a plantation owner you married your son off to your neighbors daughter you got more land.

Being the great-grandson of a pre-Civil War plantation owner in South Carolina, I'm not so sure I'd agree that plantation agriculture was such a negative thing.
I think my great-grandfather probably did very well for himself, considering the time in which he lived.
Before the Civil War, he was a multi-millionaire, which would probably make him a billionaire by today's standards.
You might want to qualify your specific issues, so I / someone could give you a more precise answer.
