I read somewhere (in some earlier time) they used to leave presents in the tree. As they got heavier and bigger presents, it is likely they couldn't go in the tree, so they put them under it.

I don't have a source to back this up, but I think it may have evolved from at first decorating trees outside with nuts & berries & popcorn strings & stuff like that for the animals in winter, to leaving food and clothes for the poor, to presents under the tree.
makes sense to me, anyway.

well it just makes sense, where else would you put them? they can,t go on the tree.,and they need to be near the tree,so the only reasonable place would be to put them where they will fit under the tree............

With early christians, it seems to have originated with the 3 magi giving gifts to the Christ child.

Also, St. Nicholas (Santa Claus) was known for giving gifts to the poor.
