You aren't a hypocrite for drinking alcohol. You might not even be a hypocrite if you put down pot use and drink alcohol. You could even be an alcoholic and put down pot use without being a hypocrite.
Pot use is illegal. Whether or not this should be so is another question, but it is currently illegal (in most cases).
A drunk driver putting down pot use would be another question, as both are illegal.
Personally, while pot use is illegal, I don't necessarily consider it immoral. To me, any material used in moderation, and in control, is not immoral. I have no problem with the idea that Poe used opium. What I do have a problem with is when substance use becomes substance abuse. Using it unwisely, such as when driving is a serious problem.
Also, there is the subject of addiction. Addiction, to me, isn't immoral, but it is a disease. It's a fact that of those who use substances, some will become addicted. It would be nice if we lived in a society that was educated enought to recognize addiction and treat the individual with some respect, recognizing that illness is not a moral issue. Perhaps then, those who became addicted would be less likely to resist treatment.

It depends. A hypocrite is "a person who professes beliefs and opinions that he or she does not hold in order to conceal his or her real feelings or motives" (Wordnet). If, for instance, I truly believe that smoking marijuana recreationally is wrong, but drinking alcohol recreationally is not, then I would not be a hypocrite. If, however, I actually believed that the two drugs are of equal effect and substance, I would then be a hypocrite.
Reasons for distinguishing between the recreational use of various drugs are many, and many depend on your cultural background. Some people say marijuana is different because you can inadvertently dose those around you, via secondhand smoke. Others say the drugs are the same because they are mild and well tolerated in most people. If, however, you look at say, a full-blood Cherokee and an Irish American, you'll find a huge difference in alcohol toleration. So, while an Irishman might think nothing at downing a 6 pack, the Cherokee might have a horror of drunkeness to the point that he or she might not drink at all This is a purely hypothetical example, of course - most of us in this nation are of somewhat mixed heritage, some more than others. But the culture we were predominantly brought up in will generally prevail! Most well thought arguments do end up acknowledging at least some difference between the action of the drugs, but disagreeing whether the end result is effectivily similar in degree.

I don't drink or smoke and have nothing against those who do, but I just have to say that those out there who claim that alcohol is harmless I just have to point out that although it is legal it is still a toxin produced as a self defencive mechanism by some types of microorganisms to kill of competing microorganisms and enough will kill macro organisms (animals and humans). Hope this helps.
