I don't really think so, but I haven't the disposable income to buy that sort of thing myself so it could just be the jealousy talking.
If the students earned the money, honestly, to purchase these gifts, and feel that they are appropriate, then there's nothing to stop them. However, they are pretty pricey items, so if I were a parent I would probably have to have the fiscal responsibilty talk seeing that, including making them go to http://www.360financialliteracy.org which is a great site if you've not been to educate people about well, how to handle your finances like a responsible person. Spending like that at this age seems like it might lead to poor spending habits later, meaning credit card debt, bankruptcy, who knows what.

I reckon it's alrite as long as you work ur *** off for the money to pay for those things.
And if you are the one who's gonna give it to ur friends, make sure u get something as good quality as what u given them
