If the person's standing right there, I read the card to look appreciative that they took time to write something. If not, I toss it to the side unless it's money in there and rip away at my gift, sorry, I'm a child at heart, we didn't celebrate Christmas or any holidays growing up so I'm making up for it now.

Read card first, seems like a tradition. If several gifts then it is best so you know who it is from and can act appropriately to gift if the person is there.
