There are 2 main kind of hardwood flooing:
Wax Based...mainly found in older homes and higher maintance.
Polyurthain based...New products and easier to take care of.
If you have wax based, I would strip and poly over them. Renewal by Vaithaine is availible @ Lowe's and is the easiest way to redo either floor

Go to Home Depot. It depends on what kind of hardwood floors your have.
