First of all, this is a problem that would not be completely answered with a book, so I do have a disclaimer. My writing will be ramblings and disconnected and could be filled in much more.
Many of our "problems" are linked to the rest of the world. If we were always an isolationist country, we would no longer exist. I'm not naive enough to think that the U.S. is innocent, but it has done some things throughout its history to help the global situation. A few facts:
1 - The United States drafted the first constitution in the history of the world.
2 - If it were not for the assistance of the U.S. in World War II, Nazi Germany would have won. (no so easy to factually prove, but it's true.)
3 - The number of liberal democracies is at the highest number in the history of the world. A liberal democracy is a democracy that votes in its power. Some countries that consider themselves democracies actually have fixed elections.
........................................................
I'm not saying the U.S. government is composed of saints. The Federal Bureau of Investigation sent anonymous death threats to Martin Luther King. The amount of violence they've used is so over the top, it's unfathomable. American businesses aren't innocent either. They have supported sweat shops by using them. We are not innocent either. As consumers, we remain ignorant as to the tactics of businesses and therefore support cheap and child labor by using the products our businesses use. Our national debt and trade deficit will cause this country to fall, unless we have a government that starts to do more things that will cause great unrest. We need to create a global standard for working conditions. We also need to strive toward peace. Just because we have problems does not mean we should not look at the rest of the world.
It is not only our government that allows these horrible working conditions to exist. It is the rest of the world, and in particular, the governments of the nations where this work takes place. We need to create a global standard. We need to create a global standard. We need to create a global standard. This can be repeated over and over and until there is a global standard, we will have an "immigration problem." Yes, I know, we are all immigrants to this country. However, some people believe it to be a problem. We can fix the "immigration problem" by increasing wages in the countries where our immigrants come from.
OK, I give up, there is so much to say, i'll sum it up with one thing.
WE ARE A POWER BECAUSE WE HAVE RESOURCES OTHER COUNTRIES DO NOT HAVE. WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO THE REST OF THE WORLD. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN AMERICAN AND AN IRAQI AND AN INDONESIAN AND AN INDIAN AND ANY OTHER NATIONALITY. WE ARE ALL PEOPLE. WE NEED TO ACT AS IF WE ARE ALL ONE PEOPLE. NATIONALISM WILL BE THE LAST SURVIVING PREJUDICE. QUIT ACTING LIKE AMERICA SHOULD DEAL WITH AMERICANS AND CANADIANS SHOULD ACT FOR CANADIANS AND MEXICANS SHOULD ACT FOR MEXICANS. WE NEED TO CARE FOR EVERYONE AND IN MANY INSTANCES, WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO THE MOST GOOD FOR PEOPLES OTHER THAN AMERICANS WITH LESS EFFORT THAN IT WOULD TAKE US TO DO THE SAME GOOD FOR AMERICANS.
again, sorry this was so disjunct, but it's rambling and take what you get.

well first off america isnt fixing any problems overseas they are provoking them! we took out the terrorists so now give the Iraqi government a helpful nudge to democracy, keep a few troops there but bring the rest home!! there is not point to this war! besides the fact that if we were truley fighting terrorists we would be looking for Osama bin landen or we would be in africa stopping their government from breeding more terrorists by capturing the ugandan children and brain washing them into becoming terrorists. true america has its own problems but those are from the corruptions of a society we created to become a monster. that is our own fault and politicions wont fix those problems because they like to hide the fact that these faults exsist. we are a very wealthy country and helping out those from third world countries is showing basic human compassion for those less fortuante. if we dont help them who will?

I've often asked that question -- particularly when I'm downtown to deliver coffee and stuff to homeless folks. *Some* Americans (please stop grouping an entire country and painting every individual with the same broad brush) believe that it's more important to show our power than to help our own people. I don't know why, I'm afraid. I just wanted to point out that not all Americans feel that way. We don't all think we should be fighting other peoples' wars.

Holy freaking crap. Ok I'm American let's just get that straight. The world is our problem, because it's our world. Actually not American's world, but the people that benefit from that monopoly and trust me I'm not one of them, but it's simple. The people that live in America don't do crap, because they throw us a few crumbs, but compared to living in Africa these crumbs are like banquets. Yes humans are selfish. Screw all your geopolitical Bs, other people are calling the shots and we are along for the ride.

Because overseas is where the oil wells are. Plain and simple. Never underestimate simple human greed as a motive to apparently complex issues.

Its always easier to see what's wrong with others than yourself. Its the same with countries. Other problems seem easier to solve than our own. Also we want to keep the fighting away from home.
