Every time there is a fight in a basketball game, I have to laugh. I especially get tickled when they say that the game has circled the drain, as far as the on court violence is concerned. The reason basketball got the nickname "Cage", is because they used to have chicken wire up at some basketball venues due to fans throwing things at players, and doubtlessly vice versa.
Personally, I think the NBA does have to step in and the penalties were fair. Carmelo Anthony was an idiot for punching the other player, most because of his star status. He is the best player on the team and needs to stay out of that crap. He most likely cost his organization bargaining clout in going after a trade for Allen Iverson. My guess is it cost them that second number one.
Just look back at Rudy Tomjanovich's playing career to see what a well placed sucker punch can do.

Well for one thing hockey fights cannot pour into the stands taking out camera men and fans as they slap each other! Another thing is Hockey players know how to fight and don't throw punches and run off the ice!
Basketball does make a big deal out of fights but after the Artest situation they really have a right too! I love watching fights in Hockey because it is one on one and they fight until somebody goes down! Basketball fights are funny too watch because they just look like fools most of the time! Though I think Karl and Thomas should lace up the gloves at the all-star weekend to see who is really the man!

After the brawl at Detroit, the NBA has cracked down on fighting. I believe that the NBA should continue to discourage this behavior and that the penalties against the players were adequate. If anything, I think Carmelo should have gotten a larger suspension without pay. There will always be small fights, but to have two teams acting in chaos is unacceptable for the NBA. Bottom line is that they are professionals in a non-contact sport and they should act accordingly.

What was the last big NBA fight like that? Pacers and Pistons in 2004. These are very rare in the NBA, and are extremely common in the NHL. Since it's allowed more in NHL, and strictly enforced in the NBA, it's more fun to watch an NBA fight because you know that somebody is getting into trouble afterwards, and it will definitely be front page news. And, the players get suspended, so if they play against your team within 15 games, they will be minus 15 of their good players.

I think it was made a bigger deal since the once proud Knicks are virtually a shell of what they once were (during the Ewing, Starks, Oakley era of the 90's). Very few people go to Madison Square Garden, Isaiah Thomas has alienated the fans somehow.
Add to the Ron Artest incident...the NBA had to lay down the suspensions. Too bad Isaiah didn't get one, based on egging Carmelo Anthony by saying comments to him from the bench.

No. These are grown men playing proffessional basketball. It is a major issue when you got men at an average height of 6 feet street fighting on national TV. It is an embarrassment to the NBA and to the nature of basketball.

the difference is hockey is white and the nba is mostly black..the fight wasn't even that bad..they act like all hell broke loose in the garden..and if you ask me, it wasn't really a "brawl"..it was just alot of pushing and shoving j.r.smith and Nate Robinson were the only ones that fought..then melo had the sucker punch..i think the nba was so excited to get some action, they over reacted..then the 15 game suspension for melo is ridiculous

Do not compare the two. Hockey allows contact, basketball does not. To start a brawl of this nature, I agree with the league for the punishment handed out.Fighting should not be permitted in any sport period.

No. The NBA has to crack down on brawls and fights. They are trying to play agame, not have a wrestling match. The NBA might be strict, but it's its players are young and easily influenced.
