I got quite a buildup of journals, but I don't know what to write in them. I don't want to write a diary, those are boring to me. I want to write...it's almost like a need to plan and write and imagine, but i don't know what....its hard to explain. Its like if someone gave you 600 pounds of various types of candy, where in the world would you start? It would take a little while wouldn't it? Anyway...any ideas?

I swear I'm NOT an author looking for ideas. Just some thoughts about what to write in a journal.....

Write about events that have happened to you. That way if you ever forget you can always look back and remember.

Here's some thoughts...

1) A dream journal - Record your dreams as soon as you wake up, when they are most vivid. Look back on them later and you may find them very enlightening.

2) Write about a goal(s). Perhaps start with your New Year's resolution(s) and track your progress through the year. Goals are more likely the be reached if you write them down and make them more concrete.

3) Giving thanks. If you don't want to write a "diary," you could use the journal to reflect on the things you are thankful for each day. Giving thanks is a good way to keep perspective.

4) Book/Movie/Current event review. Use the journal to record your thoughts about these things. It may spark new thoughts which might lead to writing that seems more substantial to you.

Hope this helps

I use one journal for everything, to take notes from books that I read, taking messages from the phone, writing a "to do" list. I don't write diary notes in it simply because I don't keep a diary. After a couple of years, I've developed quite a few journals like this and they're very different and fun to look through in certain parts of my life.

You'll then start to find more things to write or develop but not be pressured to write long diary entries.

Start a food journal and write down everything you eat in one day and I mean everything, even gum and mints. When you go back after a year and look at what you were eating a year ago, it is amazing how much your tastes change and how what you eat changes with your circumstances (like moving to another state, getting married, having a baby, getting a new boyfriend/girlfriend). Or its amazing how you are still eating the same foods a year later. Its weird how you will see on a certain date a year ago you ordered pizza and then did the exact same thing this year. Sounds boring, but it really isn't.

The only way to get started is to write whatever comes in to your mind. That's what I always do. Open the journal, look at the page, and write down the first thing that pops into your head, and then the next, then the next, etc. And continue from there.

Good luck and Merry Christmas!

what would be boring to you, might not be to someone else. i dont know why im answering this question, i havent read a book in years, but it seems with the arts, either its really off center, or its some thing everyone can relate to. sometimes it seems to be both. havent read the books, but seen the movies, and most contain a subject matter that ive thought about. i dont think we are all that different, alot of people have the same thoughts in some degree. if someone gave me 600 pounds of various types of candy, i would start with the chocolate.

Write down your thoughts and interest's. Keep a notepad with you and write down your thought's even if they don't seem important now they may tie in later. The morning when you first wake up is when you have your best ideas. Write it down, you'll be surprised at how much valuable info you will come up with. I think you should stick with the diary and take writing classes, as you say you want to write but I don't think you know how to start. Professional training would help you tremendously as you already have the love for writing.

Why dont you write some kind of diary, but instead of a diary about yourself, one about a made up character (or characters), where you can mix reality and fiction. Reality adding things from your own life and environment, and fiction, adding fantasy, or even using a description of how would you like your life to be.
Maybe, I'm confusing you a little bit, but to me it seems an exciting and creative idea. Maybe from your work could come up even an interesting novel, if you have enough imagination and writing skills.

Good luck

Just start writing. Use this technique: Stream of Consciousness. Many people have used it and become famous. It is not the same as automatic writing, that's fun to. But yeah, write something about the meaning of life according to you, your perspective on morality, your opinion of whatever. Stream of consciousness would be a great help, for as in thoughts, they are all strung together.

I would suggest writing what your passionate about. Or if you get into one of those arguments where no matter what you say, the person is too thick headed to get it through their brain(even though you're right). I usually find it pretty easy to write about things that aggravate me. For example : Global Warming, or BUSH. When I see people posting questions about things that really concern me or just REALLY get me going I seem to be able to write forever. Plus it's a good way of expressing your feeling about things that you don't seem to have anyone in your life to talk about. Good luck either way, and Happy Holidays!

I like to write too... I have written poems thoughts, stories..One good way to start is to write characters...think of a person, then think of the story that made them who they are, good or bad..then you could even put the two together..or you could think of what you want out of life and write a story of some one who goes out and gets it. Like any other art or communication, writers need to be passionate about what they are doing,
OH.. one more idea, an alternate ending to a real life situation.
