Crocodiles and an alligators are from different families of crocodilians. Crocodiles are from the crocodylidae family, alligators are from the alligatoridae family.
The crocodile's upper and lower jaws are generally almost the same width so that, even when the mouth is closed the teeth "interlock". Crocodiles also tend to have a sort of depression around the snout area. Alligators have a wider upper jaw and a narrower lower jaw: the lower jaw "nests" in the upper jaw. An obvious physical difference between the two is the shape of the head: Crocs have a pointy snout, while alligators have a U shaped, rounded snout. Alligators also prefer freshwater while crocodiles like brackish water and sometimes even salt water
