hi,

okay, so this will be about tampons and mom's approval.

i got my period when i was 13 and at 15 i've started to use tampons. now, i'm 18 and i've been using tampons for 3 years.
the problem is that i still have not told my mom that i use tampons, and kind of scared to do so to this day.

at one point she mentioned that she really disapproved of tampons, b/c according to her, only non-virgins can use them.

QUESTION->> why do you think she is so against me using tampons vs. pads? and don't u think i'm old enough to tell her like it is and that it's my personal decision, and not her's to make?

please help, as u can see i've been scared to tell her about it for 3years! thank you

ps. i think she is really convinced that i should remain a virgin for a long time, too late, i'm not a virgin. maybe she is scared to b/c of the common myth of tampons and no virginity?

oh, I think you can tell her, you should have been able to a long time ago. Tampons are not only used by non virgins, anyone can use them. my daughter is 13 and she will probably switch to tampons some time in the future like say at about age 14-15. pads I feel are unsanitary. I feel alot cleaner with tampons. I'm sorry your mom feels this way and has made it hard for you talk to her, but being that you are 18, I think you should tell her and get that monkey off your back once and for all. you'll feel alot better once you have.

Tampons carry a risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome, so it's possible your mom is worried about your health. I've also heard of some very religious people not allowing their daughters to use tampons because using them breaks some kind of tissue which supposedly makes the girl less of a virgin - I'm not exactly sure what the logic is behind that, actually. Anyway, that really isn't true, and the tissue can be torn in a lot of different ways. Something as simple as riding your bike can tear it.

If you really want to tell your mom about this, than just be mature and tell her you're informed about tampon use and be careful about avoiding TSS. 18 is a fairly mature age for these kinds of decisions - she will probably respect your choice.

Your mom's facts about tampons are wrong! Tell her that it doesn't matter if your a virgin or not to be able to use tampons and have proof, show her the facts. You don't have to tell her if you're not comfortable. You're grown and can make your own decisions. But if the subject does come up I think you should just tell her, close your eyes and just blurt it out.

Just tell her that you use tampons and with all due respect to your mom, let her know that tampons does NOT mean only non virgins can use them, it's not like you lost your virginity. But, let her know that you feel a lot more comfortable on wearing them and that you're old enough to do so.

Ya know, you're old enough that it really isn't mom's business if you're using tampons or pads. It really doesn't matter. Use what you want. If your mom picks up the topic and gives you grief, then find some sort of article for her online from a OB/GYN answering this same question and prove mom wrong so she'll leave you alone on the subject.

There's nothing wrong with using tampons over pads, I got my period at eleven and used them at twelve. I think she just doesn't want you using them because it stretches your hymen, and she probably believes that should be broken on your wedding night. You'll probably recall it hurt the first time? That was your hymen stretching, but it most likely didn't break.

Explain to her your reasons for using them. Personally, it feels cleaner to me, and tell her it's not going to make you any less a virgin because your hymen is stretched. You could even play the 'my first-time will feel better' card if you want to.

But honestly, it's your personal preference, and she can't do anything about it anyways.

Good lucky and Merry Christmas =)

You are 18 years old. It is not your mum's business what kind of menstrual devices you are using. This is something you decide and you don't have to justify it at all. My mum was also against tampons and I used them since I was 12. She means well but this is your decision and your body.

She may be against the use of tampons because of old, outdated beliefs on the subject.

There is nothing wrong with using tampons, personally, I think they're more comfortable and they feel "cleaner" to me.

There's no reason you even have to tell your mother about it. They're likely beliefs she's held since she was a teenager herself and may not be able to shake them off. There's nothing to be ashamed of, but you may just want to keep it to yourself.

I do think that you are old enough.I mean you are 18 years old.It is your decision.Maybe the reason why she does not want you to use them is because she had a bad moment with them when she was younger. My mom won't let me shave and I know that she had a big problem with shaking when she first started to.I think that is why she won't let me shave.

Hey, i'm 16 and i've been using them for about a year or so and my mom knows.. she shouldn't be mad if you just tell her how much more comfortable and easier they are. plus your 18 years old it's not like she can tell you not to wear them lol
