a shelter, because of the simple fact that breeders keep their pets but shelters keep them for like a week and then kill them. save an animal

Depends on what you're looking for. If you have a specific breed in mind and don't mind shelling out $400-$1000+ from a breeder, go for it. You'll have the peace of mind that you are getting a quality pet from a reputable breeder (always make sure you meet the breeders in person first). Also, be sure to see where they keep their animals.
If you just want to adopt just to own a pet and don't have anything in mind, please go to a shelter. The great thing about adopting an animal is they are often already housebroken, grown out of their 'crazy puppy phase', and will soon learn to love you as if you had them since birth. We own several dogs - 2 from breeders and 2 from the shelter. We love them all equally. You can find great pets from the shelter. Also, some will tell you to stay clear of timid dogs - we have 2 that seemed timid at the shelter but have really come around. These two are the most loyal and loving dogs I've ever owned.
Either way you go - you'll be happy I'm sure. Just stay clear of pet stores and mail order pets PLEASE.

You would honestly be suprised to see how many PUREBRED dogs there are at shelters! Our shelter that I work at actually had a labradoodle dropped off! Those animals cost close to $800, but he was just too much for his people..they couldn't deal with his puppy stage...If you're interested in a specific breed then check local shelter websites...they might have some! Another great option is going through BREED RESCUES, these rescues usually work by volunteer foster homes ,so you'll have to contact someone and make an apointment to view any dogs. However a breed rescue is manned by people dedicated to a specific breed and if nothing else they're very knowledgable about there breed so they would be able to tell you if the breed you're looking into is something that will fit your lifestyle.
One suggestion if you chose to go to a shelter:
As employees at the shelter, we're trained to help people chose a dog based on their LIFESTYLE, not how CUTE a dog is...handelers know the dogs really well and be able to match potential families with dogs. Go to the shelter and BE HONEST about your lifestyle. If you're away from home 18 hours a day, a puppy isn't good for you! If you're a couch potatoe, you don't want that VERY cute, but VERY, VERY hyper lab in kennel #1! And don't think that you have to chose right away, take your time and make a good dicision. Go to petfinder.org it only list SHELTER ANIMALS! And you can get the contact names for breed rescues or shelters. You can search by animal, breed, age, size, and area. I could never spend the $500 dollars on a pure bred when I KNOW that there are so many dogs in shelters, needing homes!
Not to mention a lot of pure bred dogs have serious issues including hip dysplasia and other terrible conformation issues that severly shorten the life of your beloved companion!

it depends...on either of those before you just go to a shelter and get an animal you should check the place out first make sure that they actually do take care of the animals (some shelters don't take good care of the animals at all) < and what i mean by that is that some shelters will get animals that have diseases and may die within the day (and not tell you) like some stuff like that> check they're crudintials...same with a breeder..check them out ask questions. If you find a shelter that's great! get one from there puppies and older dogs need homes..sure a breeders dogs come with papers usually but if ur looking for purebreed shelters have them too for alot cheaper...haha soo looong story short check both out first before deciding

I like the shelter, but the breeders are good too. there are so many good dogs in shelters that are in need of a good home, and I think that the shelter is a lot cheaper than the breeder. Go with the shelter.

Unless you are totally in love with a certain breed - adopt an animal from a shelter!

If you just want a companion pet, definitely go for a shelter animal. There are lots of breed specific rescues if there's a particular breed you like, and many of these are very nice dogs that are just being re-homed due to circumstances.
However, if you are wanting a dog to train for a specific job like herding, search and rescue or something like that which needs to be started at a young age, you need to plan ahead and get to know a reliable breeder who health tests and breeds for the traits you desire in your chosen dog work.

You should go with a shelter or a rescue group. My last 2 dogs are rescue dogs and I feel good about saving a dog's life. I have 2 wonderful, great pets and the neat thing is, I think they realise what a horrible life they had before, and they seem to really enjoy their life now They had been beaten, starved, one had heart worms, eye infections etc.. when they were rescued and now they are happy, outgoing, and healthy. Check out petfinder.com. This is a really great site, you can type in all the qualities you're looking for in a pet, type in your zip code, and the search engine will show you all the pets available in your area.
