There's a very good reason why Santa wears red and white, and it has *nothing* to do with Coca-Cola.
Saint Nicholas was a Greek monk (born 326 AD) who later become a bishop. Traditionally at that time, a bishop's robes were red and white, and many of the depictions of the saint through the years carried that imagery. Even Sinterklaas is Holland is dressed as a bishop with robes of red and white. When Dutch colonists in America brought Sinterklaas with them, their traditions merged with traditions from other cultures to create the Santa we know today. Clement Clark Moore's poem 'A Visit from Saint Nicholas' and political cartoonist Thomas Nast's depictions pretty much solidified the look that has endured since then.

Saint Nicholas wore a red priests robe.. these fools that keep talking about coke are just so young.
:Images of Santa Claus were further cemented through Haddon Sundblom's depiction of him for The Coca-Cola Company's Christmas advertising. The popularity of the image spawned urban legends that Santa Claus was in fact invented by Coca-Cola or that Santa wears red and white because those are the Coca-Cola colors. Both claims are false.[2]"

Early in the 1930's (I think 1934) Coke-Cola had an artist depict Santa Claus drinking a coke and insisted his suit be coke red.

Because of Coca Cola. Before their advertising campaign that had him dressed in red and white he traditionally wore green.

It's a safety issue. If his sleigh crashes, he will be easier to see in the snow.
